It can be very awkward when a missionary visits a supporting church and a well intentioned person welcomes them “home” and says it must be great to have a break from the work. Those with experience know the missionary furlough is anything but a break. They also know the furlough is a confusing time with attention divided between family, supporters and the work back on the field. It is particularly hard for any missions kids being tugged along. It can easily lead to questioning why missionaries need furloughs.
To help understand this sometimes misunderstood topic, Facilitating the Mission’s Jeff Jackson and Ed Compean look at the purpose of the missionary furlough. It is the first for three podcasts on the subject of furloughs.
